Kindness in ActionA ministry of Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church
What's it about?
This is a ministry that carries out our church's mission statement by doing small acts of kindness for people in Huber
Heights as a way of showing them God's love in a practical way. These acts may include handing out free cold drinks
or ice cream to people gathered on hot summer days, hot drinks or hand warmers to people working outside on cold winter
days, washing windows, washing cars, giving away light bulbs, raking leaves, even cleaning restrooms in local businesses.
We believe that small acts of kindness done with great love will change the world. We want to love people into a
relationship with Jesus Christ one person at a time, beginning right here in Huber Heights.
When does it happen? (Temporarily Inactive -- Inquire About How You Can Help Restart
It)
We meet on the second Saturday each month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Each of us meets in the downstairs
Activities Center and chooses which of the different Outreach teams to join that day after a brief orientation. We then leave with
our Outreach Team Captain and spend the next hour out in the community doing our chosen Outreach activity. Then we
return to the Fellowship Hall for free pizza & sharing of stories about our various Outreach adventures of that morning.
How can I help?
Everyone can help. We need people of all ages. If you are under age 14, you should bring a parent along to
participate with our Outreach Team. You can also help by volunteering to serve on our Support Team to handle supplies
and help out behind the scenes. You may serve as Team Leader to handle planning, purchasing and training. Or you may
help by donating supplies (for instance, 12-packs of Coca Cola & water, spare coins used in "Quarters for Kindness") and,
of course, by praying for this ministry.
CONSIDERING MEMBERSHIP??
You are encouraged to attend the next NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION, usually held on Sunday afternoon at 12:15 in
the Activities Center. You will receive a complementary lunch and
childcare that day, along with a great introduction to our ministries
and facilities. Contact Tom Hanover, tomh@sulphurgrove.org or Jon
Morgan, jonm@sulphurgrove.org
by phone at 236-5970 to register or to
receive more information -- including the date of the next Orientation. You are encouraged to then enter our church
family as those who join us in making these three commitments as members of the SULPHUR GROVE United Methodist Church.
First, there is a commitment to BELIEVING in Christ. In the United Methodist Church you are asked to
publicly affirm your belief that you have renounced the spiritual forces of wickedness, rejected the evil powers of
this world, and repented of your sin; affirm your belief that you have accepted the freedom and power God gives you to
resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves; and affirm that you have confessed
Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promised to serve him as your Lord, in union with
the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races.
Second, there is a commitment to BELONGING with Christ. We begin by being baptized with Christ as a symbol
of our dying and rising with him. In the United Methodist Church you are then asked to join other members in affirming
your loyalty to Christ's universal church and to the UMC by doing all in your power to strengthen its ministries; and
affirming your faithfulness by participating in our own local ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and
your service.
Third, there is a commitment to BECOMING like Christ. The Bible calls every believer and every member to
spiritual maturity. "Speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ."
(Ephesians 4:15). Throughout his life on earth, Jesus served in ministry within a small group of fellow disciples.
We grow more like Jesus by serving others as part of a small group ministry within the church. |
