Anniversary Year Special Events
Sulphur Grove Church 140th Anniversary Reunion Weekend-- 12-13 November
14 November report: The Anniversary Reunion Weekend was a huge success -- a good
crowd enjoyed the Saturday evening program that included singing, introductions
of special guests, a look back over the past 140 years, followed by a reception
in the Activities Center. A copy of the
PROGRAM
can be viewed here.
At both Sunday worship services at Taylorsville, the Reverend C. Edwin Pellett,
pastor at SGUMC from 1952 to 1961, was the guest preacher.
The church that now is known as Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church on Taylorsville Road is celebrating
its 140th Anniversary Reunion Weekend Nov. 12-13, 2011. As the culmination of the past six months of
mini-observances, SGUMC invites the community and friends to a Saturday evening celebration, 7-8:30 p.m.,
Nov. 12, 2011.
The Saturday evening’s program will celebrate the church’s mission of “Growing Disciples,
Living and Sharing God’s Love,” according to Senior Pastor Tom Hanover. Members of the 140th
Anniversary Committee will lead congregational singing of well-known hymns plus provide a visual recap of
some of the church’s ministries and programs, including its mission tradition, strong educational
programming for all ages, the expansion from the original Taylorsville Road campus to include the Y campus
on Shull Road, as well as its more recent partnerships with Good Shepherd United Methodist (in Park Layne,
New Carlisle) and Brandt United Methodist churches.
A PowerPoint presentation will include many pictures
from the church’s history.
The celebration will feature some of the church’s rich music ministries, including the Men’s
Quartet, the Praise Kids Ensemble, Holden Chapel Singers and concluding with a piano quartet.
“It will be an exciting, moving and inspiring experience to celebrate Sulphur Grove’s growth
from a small brick church to its present expanded structure,” said Kate Roberts, chair of the 140th
Anniversary Committee. Other members are Joan and Garth Borton, Alice and Barry Savory, Alma Ault, Leslie
Godzik, Sue Breisch, Reed Romine, Walt Saxe, Charlie Garland, Jean Mahan and Rev. Hanover.
Exactly 140 years prior to that celebration on Nov. 12, the church that at that time was named Holden Chapel
was dedicated. It was named for its founding pastor Samuel S. Holden. The foundation for that original
building came from a quarry on Taylorsville Road; the clay for the brick was dug from the land adjacent to
and west of the church…and fired on the school grounds (Titus School).
“Please plan to join us as we celebrate our rich history that has shared God’s love for 14 decades;
we can hardly wait to see what we will have undertaken by our 150th Anniversary,” said Rev. Hanover.
Immediately following the program, guests will be invited for homemade desserts and refreshments in the
Activity Center (circa 2007), provided by United Methodist Women. Donations will be accepted for the desserts
to benefit UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief, a worldwide emergency relief organization). Around
the room there will be static displays with even more pictures tracing the church’s history.
Recognition of this Anniversary will extend into the Sunday services, with the sermon being offered by
Rev. C. Edwin Pellett, who was pastor from 1952-61. Sulphur Grove is located at 7505 Taylorsville Rd., Huber Heights. There is ample parking. The building
is handicapped accessible on all levels.
